Honoring President Jimmy Carter's Legacy with Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver

Vancouver, BC - Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver proudly stands in solidarity with the global Habitat family as one world pays homage to the remarkable life of President Jimmy Carter, whose decades-long partnership with Habitat for Humanity transformed lives, strengthened communities, and raised awareness about the need for affordable housing. His steadfast commitment to the Habitat mission continues to inspire action and hope worldwide.

A Legacy of Service with Habitat for Humanity

President Carter and his wife Rosalynn began their work with Habitat in 1984 with an infusion of energy and a hands-on commitment to the organization. That same year, they founded the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project, an annual event that brought together thousands of volunteers to build and repair homes for low-income families. Over the years, the Carters devoted their time and effort to Habitat projects in more than 14 countries, including the United States, South Africa, and Thailand.

In Greater Vancouver, Habitat shares the President's belief that safe, decent, and affordable housing is a basic human right. His commitment has brought unprecedented visibility to Habitat's mission and inspired countless individuals to get involved.

Inspiring Advocacy and Hands-on Leadership

President Carter has led by example, often working side-by-side with volunteers and homeowners at Habitat build sites. He has also provided leadership above the hard hat, advocating for systemic change and marshaling substantial resources for Habitat's programs.

President Carter's dedication to Habitat for Humanity is an expression of the community spirit and personal compassion that underpin our mission here in Greater Vancouver," said Persis Ahrestani, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver. "His commitment to empowering families through affordable homeownership has changed lives, and inspired volunteers and donors to support Habitat's work locally and around the world."

A Message of Condolence

We join the multitude of partners and friends throughout the world who are heartbroken with the passing of President Jimmy Carter. Through his life, he maintained respect toward commitment to public service, human rights, and concerns for less fortunate persons everywhere; it indelibly marked the world.
