Inspiring the Next Generation of Builders: Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver’s Youth Skills Development Program
[Vancouver, BC] – Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver proudly concludes its transformative Youth Skills Development Program, a dynamic 5-week initiative that has empowered over 25 youth aged 15-25 with essential skills for the future. Participants from Burnaby School District - SD41, British Columbia Institute of Technology, and North Vancouver School District #44 engaged in hands-on training in site safety, first aid, deconstruction, forklift operation, and tool mastery, preparing them for careers in construction and beyond.
“This program wasn’t just about teaching skills—it was about opening doors to new opportunities and empowering young individuals to build their futures,” said Aditya Chauhan, Logistics Manager at Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver (HFHGV), who led the initiative. “It’s amazing to see what can be achieved when a community comes together.”
Key contributors to the program’s success included Persis Ahrestani, CEO, HFHGV, Bo Ocampo, Environmental Sustainability Specialist, District of North Vancouver, Trauma Tech, Johnston Equipment, and Erick Serpas Ventura of VEMA Deconstruction. Together, they created an environment of mentorship and learning, where young participants not only honed practical skills but also built confidence, teamwork, and a sense of accomplishment.
“Programs like these are vital for nurturing the next generation of skilled workers and leaders,” said Persis Ahrestani, CEO, HFHGV. “Seeing the enthusiasm and growth in these young individuals has been incredibly rewarding. They are not just learning technical skills but also developing the confidence and resilience needed to succeed.”
Ahrestani added, “The collaboration and dedication from everyone involved highlight the power of community-driven initiatives. It’s an honour to be part of a program that creates such meaningful opportunities.”
From crafting sheds, picnic tables, pallet Christmas trees and fence panels to mastering new skills like first aid training, safety and forklift operation, these experiences are about more than just construction. They’re about building confidence, teamwork, and a deep sense of accomplishment that stays with them long after the projects are complete. The youth’s efforts have had a direct impact on the community. They created items from salvaged materials that would’ve otherwise ended up in landfills. These items will be sold at Habitat for Humanity’s ReStores, with proceeds helping families gain access to safe and affordable housing. This initiative reflects Habitat’s mission to build brighter futures, not just for families but also for the next generation of change makers.
“To every youth who participated: thank you for being part of this journey. You’re not just building structures—you’re building brighter futures for families and yourselves.”
The Youth Skills Development Program is a testament to what can be achieved through collaboration and community spirit. Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver looks forward to continuing its mission of creating positive change, one initiative at a time.
